Why is My Tattoo Burning?

Mild tattoo burning is usually harmless and should subside within several days; however, in certain instances, this sensation warrants professional assistance.

Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction, particularly to red tattoo ink, may develop immediately after receiving it or years later.

Infections

Sometimes, Tattoos become infected, which could be the source of the burning sensation you are experiencing. Contact your artist immediately for assistance if accompanied by extreme swelling, redness, or oozing.

Consult a dermatologist immediately if you notice small papules and pustules centered around your follicles, cellulitis with spreading redness or oozing, or impetigo with erosion and serous crusting. Infections should be combatted early to minimize risks and complications.

Healing Process

During healing, it’s normal for Tattoos to scab and the skin to feel hot or burn. Excessive itching, redness, or raised rashes that do not respond to topical corticosteroid creams could indicate infection. See a dermatologist immediately to prevent scarring and damage to your tattoo.

Excessive Sun Exposure

Sun exposure without proper protection can cause Tattoos to lose definition over time. Protect your tattoo from excessive sun exposure by covering it or under a hat until fully healed. Use tattoo-safe sunscreen and moisturizing balm with shea butter.

Lotion Reactions

New Tattoos may sting and burn as your body heals, but this should pass within several days. If it continues or intensifies, seek medical attention. Symptoms such as fever, chills, extreme redness, swelling, or hot skin may indicate infection.

Soothe a burning tattoo with an ointment containing soothing ingredients like aloe vera or tea tree oil. Avoid products with perfumes/fragrances or alcohol that could irritate the area. Elevating the tattooed area and using a hypoallergenic aftercare lotion with grape seed oil can also help.

Dehydration

Mild burning sensations after applying lotion are normal and should subside independently. If the burning persists, switch to non-scented and non-greasy creams. Moisturize regularly to ensure optimal healing.

Take note of burning or stinging sensations that do not subside after several days or become more intense. These may indicate infected or allergic reactions. Contact your artist for tailored treatment plans.
