How to Keep Your Tattoo Safe

Tattoos are a common type of body art. But they can have health risks.

Before getting a tattoo, make sure the artist uses clean needles and tools. The artist should refrain from using needles from before.

Avoid Reusing Needles

Tattoo needles should only be used once. Artists shouldn’t reuse them. Use new, clean needles and syringes when getting a tattoo.

Tattoo ink can carry diseases like HIV and hepatitis. These are significant health risks. So, your tattoo parlour and the artist must follow strict hygiene rules during a session.

To make sure the needles are clean, ask your tattoo artist. They should clean their tools before each session. They should also wear disposable gloves during all procedures.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Sunlight can harm new tattoos. It can cause them to fade, spread colour, and scar. So, try not to be in direct sunlight during tattooing sessions.

Your skin can be susceptible during this time. It can easily get damaged by the sun. This could cause your tattoo to get irritated and blister.

Once your tattoo has healed and the wounds have closed, use sunscreen.

Cover your new tattoo with clothing, bandages, or an ointment. This will protect it from sunlight and prevent sunburn.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for one that doesn’t contain petroleum. Petroleum can block pores and slow down healing.

Don’t Apply Vaseline

If you apply it on a new tattoo, it might stop it from healing properly. It might also trap bacteria that can help heal the tattoo.

Vaseline stops oxygen from getting to an open wound. This might slow down its healing. It could also make the tattoo ink fade faster than usual. This could lead to a patchy or disfigured tattoo when it’s fully healed.

When a tattoo is healing, it needs extra protection. Some artists recommend using Vaseline on the tattoo before showering. This helps to protect the tattoo from water and germs.

Be Patient

It’s essential to be patient when getting a tattoo. Your artist needs time to focus on you and your design.

Getting a tattoo can be painful. This is because needles are used to pierce your skin.

If the pain gets too much, tell your artist. They can stop the procedure and help relieve the pain. You can use this time to meditate or practice deep breathing.
