How to Create Temporary Tattoos

Are you interested in decorating your skin temporarily? Do you want to avoid the permanency of a real tattoo? Creating temporary tattoos could be the solution for you!

You can create custom designs using Photoshop or similar photo-editing programs. Alternatively, you can buy pre-designed temporary tattoo sheets online or at craft stores.

Make a Stencil

Stencils are valuable tools for creating temporary tattoos. They can guide beginners and experienced artists to ensure accurate design transfer onto the skin.

You can use permanent markers or henna paste. However, remember that some may not be safe for skin contact. Always read labels carefully when selecting one for skin use.

If you’re using a permanent marker, shave the area you plan to tattoo before applying the ink. This will help the ink adhere better and last longer.

To remove your tattoo:

  1. Wet a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Carefully rub it over the tattoo.
  3. After this, wash your hands immediately to reduce the risk of irritation and infection.

Draw the Design

Drawing your design first can help you understand its layout. It also helps determine the starting point. Drawing can show if your chosen design will be easy to print and transfer onto the skin.

Start with the outline of your tattoo before filling in details and colors. This will help you achieve a more coherent overall image.

Some designers prefer sketching ideas with pencil and paper. Others use digital design programs to create their artwork.

Apply Hairspray

Hairspray can help extend the life of a temporary tattoo. It seals its edges and provides extra protection.

Hairspray can make a temporary tattoo last at least seven days or more. It adds protection from washing off or fading if the tattoo comes into contact with water or sunlight.

After spraying a design, allow it to dry without touching clothing. If there’s any extra ink, gently remove it by pressing a towel on it.

If you’re creating homemade Sharpie tattoos, hairspray sprayed from 12-16 inches away can extend its life to over a month. Alternatively, you can use baby powder to extend its durability.

Apply Baby Powder

To make your tattoos last longer, apply the baby powder directly on them. This dries out the ink and absorbs excess skin oil.

You can use talc, corn starch, and baby powder when creating temporary tattoos. These astringents reduce friction and prevent skin rashes.

Talc helps absorb sweat and keeps the skin dry. It’s commonly used on the perineum, underwear, and pads to reduce friction and odors.

However, remember that both talc and cornstarch contain asbestos. This could increase your risk of cancer. Johnson & Johnson has often been accused of not warning customers of this potential risk.
