Can Jewish People Get Pictures?

While pictures are a form of self-expression, they are not considered kosher. One student of the American University, Lily Coltoff, has a design on her leg based on an old story she heard as a child. Her piece of body art is a reference to an ancient legend of folding 1,000 paper cranes.

Can Jewish people get pictures? This is a common question for both younger and older Jewish people. It has been debated since the edict against idolatry in the Book of Leviticus. Although the practice of getting pictures is prohibited by Jewish law, many Jews do it. They believe that pictures deface the image of God and are therefore not appropriate. Nonetheless, plenty of other Jewish people get cosmetic procedures like nose jobs, Botox, and ear piercings.
