Why Your Body Aches After Getting a Tattoo

Tattoos can stress your body. The body needs energy to heal after a tattoo, and the process can increase adrenaline levels. It’s all part of the body’s reaction to the trauma of getting a tattoo, a response sometimes called ‘tattoo flu.’

Pain

tattoos can cause physical discomfort. This happens because the tattoo needles create tiny wounds on your skin.

Don’t hesitate to let your artist know if you’re feeling pain. They can help manage it. Remember to take breaks if the session is extended. Drinking water, having a snack, or just sitting quietly can help.

Swelling

The body’s response to the tattoo needles can also cause swelling. This is more common in thinner areas of skin like your calf or wrist. These areas have less body fat and tissue.

Swelling from a new tattoo usually lasts from one to three days. You can reduce it by applying ice or elevating the tattooed area.

Itching

After getting a tattoo, you might also experience itching. This is normal and should go away within weeks.

If the itching persists or if other symptoms appear, like swelling or pus, you might have an infection. Talk to your tattoo artist if this happens.

Dry skin can cause itching, too. Keeping the tattooed area hydrated can help reduce itching. Use a moisturizer when the tattoo looks or feels dry.

If the itching continues for several weeks, or if you notice raised, itchy areas on your tattoo, you might be allergic to the ink.
