Tattoo Aftercare Sheet – How to Care For Your New Tattoo
Day 1 – Removing the Plastic and Bandages
Remove the plastic and bandages covering your new tattoo within 4 hours. Wash the tattoo with antibacterial, fragrance-free soap in warm water. Pat dry gently with a paper towel.
Cleansing Your Tattoo
Once the initial bandage is removed, clean your tattoo daily using warm water and mild soap. You can use a washcloth or your hands. Be gentle but thorough to avoid bleeding and premature scabbing. Rinse well to remove all soap residue.
Moisturizing Your Tattoo
After washing and drying your tattoo, lightly apply an aftercare lotion or balm, such as Sanibalm or Aquaphor. Avoid over-moisturizing, especially if sweating heavily or working outdoors.
Handling Plasma and Ink Release
Your new tattoo may release plasma and ink for a few days. Wash your hands before touching the tattoo to reduce germ transmission. Use unscented antibacterial soap and pat dry your skin. Apply a small amount of lotion or ointment containing shea butter to nourish healing skin.
Applying Ointment
If your artist applies an adhesive film over your tattoo, leave it on for at least one to three days. After removing the film, rewash your tattoo and apply a thin coat of ointment. Avoid using too much cream to prevent scabs and discomfort.
Avoid Picking at Scabs
Don’t pick at any scabs that form on your fresh tattoo to avoid pulling out ink or causing skin irritation, infection, or scarring. Wash the tattoo gently with antibacterial soap and lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply aftercare multiple times daily.
Protecting Your Tattoo from Rubbing and Scratching
Wear clothing that won’t rub against or scratch your tattoo’s delicate skin. Avoid tight or clingy fabrics that could cause premature scab shedding, resulting in loss of color or infection.
