Tattoo Scabbing – Tattoo Healing Stages

Stage One: Days 1-3

After getting a tattoo, scabs may form around the area as the body starts to heal. It’s normal for a pus-like fluid called plasma to exude from the tattoo during this stage. Cleanse the tattoo with warm water to minimize plasma and avoid scratching or picking at it. Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Stage Two: Days 4-6

The tattoo may still exude fluids during this stage, and light scabbing may occur. Apply non-scented ointment or balm to moisturize the tattoo and avoid picking at it. Continue washing the tattoo with mild antibacterial soap, pat dry, and apply lotion as needed.

Stage Three: Days 7-14

Redness and itching should start to fade. The tattoo may appear cloudy, scaly, or dull as it heals. Cleanse the tattoo twice daily and apply healing ointment designed for new tattoos to keep it moisturized. Avoid touching the tattoo with your fingertips to minimize infection risk and protect scabs.

Stage Four: Days 15-30

Itchy and flaky patches may form as the tattoo continues to heal. Do not scratch or pick at the tattoo to prevent infection and scarring. Apply a quality tattoo ointment to moisturize the area and alleviate discomfort. Most scabs and flaky patches should disappear by this stage, though the skin may still feel dry and sensitive.
