Tattoo Regulations in the Marine Corps

The Marine Corps has one of the strictest tattoo policies. Tattooed Marines could previously be disqualified from certain duties such as recruiting duty and drill instructor training due to this policy.

Sleeve Tattoos

The Marine Corps is well known for its strict policies regarding visible tattoos. Certain tattoos, such as knee and elbow tattoos, are prohibited. Additionally, full and half sleeve tattoos that cover a substantial part of an arm or leg are not allowed. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in career implications.

Band Tattoos

Marines are prohibited from having Tattoos that cover more than two inches of their legs or arms. Visible tattoos on the neck, head, elbows, or the seventh cervical vertebrae area are strictly forbidden. Chest and back Tattoos may be permitted as long as they remain below the prohibited areas.

Head Tattoos

Marines may have one tattoo on their heads as long as it remains concealed when in uniform. Neck tattoos must also remain hidden during duty.

Arm Tattoos

Marines must be cautious when choosing the content of their tattoos. The Corps prohibits Tattoos that express sexism, nudity, racism, or drug use, as well as any content related to gang activity or extremism. Visible tattoos when wearing a standard PT uniform must be covered by slacks. Only four such Tattoos are allowed to be visible while in uniform.

Policy Changes and Concessions

Over the years, the Marine Corps has made policy changes to balance personal needs with professional military appearance and heritage. As long as tattoos do not interfere with discipline, morale, or bring discredit to their service, Marines have more freedom in tattooing their arms, legs, back, or chest. However, the Corps will screen any Tattoos before accepting anyone into service. Offensive tattoos that might offend host nation culture or violate diplomatic missions will result in denial of service.

Consequences of Violating Tattoo Policy

Marines who violate the tattoo policy may become ineligible for reenlistment, promotion, or worldwide assignment. Those with noncompliant tattoos must seek laser removal or resizing services to comply with the policy. Noncompliant Marines may finish their current tour but will not be eligible for future tours of duty.
