Lord of the Rings Cast Tattoos

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies hold a special place in Tolkien fans and film enthusiasts’ hearts; for those involved with making them, those memories remain more than fond ones; they are imprinted onto their bodies.

The Nine Fellowship Members

Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Bill Boyd, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, and Elijah Wood all had Tattoos of “nine” written in Elvish to represent their nine fellowship members – this decision being declined by actor John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli; however, his stunt double got one as well.

Bilbo’s Door

Esther Sanchez, a journalism freshman, decided to immortalize Bilbo Baggins with her back shoulder tattoo of Bilbo’s door courtesy of a local tattoo artist. This depicts a circular door featuring intricate ironwork. Gandalf scratched a rune on Bilbo’s door so the dwarves would know which Hobbit hole they should explore.

Frodo’s Eyes

Getting a Lord of the Rings tattoo is an ideal way to show devotion to this epic trilogy, which is widely considered one of the finest movies ever made. The One Ring is an iconic symbol, making it ideal to display one’s passion for the Star Wars franchise. Said to possess magical properties, many people desire to get it tattooed onto themselves as an expression of that love.

Frodo’s Ring

Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), one of the main characters from Fellowship, played an essential part in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. To pay tribute to his role, many Lord of the Rings fans get a tattoo featuring Frodo holding onto the Ring on their shoulder – the perfect tribute to an epic tale that left us speechless in 2000.

Frodo’s Heart

Several cast members made permanent reminders of their time working on these films with matching Tattoos honoring their time on set. Orlando Bloom (Frodo), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Christopher Lee (Sam), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) all received Sindarin Tattoos of “9,” signifying the nine members of Fellowship who left Rivendell for adventure in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Miranda Otto’s portrayal of Eowyn was one of Tolkien’s most robust female roles, her sword Sting being an effective deterrent when approaching orcs and glowing blue when attacking.
