Causes of Bumps Around New Tattoos

Signs of infection could arise in the form of bumps on a tattoo that is currently healing, should either the artist neglect to follow proper hygienic protocols or bacteria enters during the tattooing process.

Allergic Reactions

Allergies are one of the leading causes of itchy, bumpy skin around newly-inked tattoos, whether due to ingredients in ink (such as red ink containing iodine) or an existing skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis. Allergic reactions may also be brought on by sun exposure.

Sun Exposure

An unpleasant reaction can arise from getting tattooed, particularly when your body recognizes the ink as foreign material and responds accordingly. This often manifests in red, bumpy rashes on your skin – known as photoallergic contact dermatitis.

Infection

If your tattoo becomes swollen, itchy, painful, or oozing, please see a doctor immediately for treatment, and antibiotics may be prescribed to ease symptoms and clear up an infection. Tattoo infection can arise directly or months later due to bacteria entering through healed wounds or needles that contain infected bacteria.

Granulomas

A granuloma is a small cluster of white blood cells and tissue found in your lungs, skin, or other body parts that occurs due to infections, inflammation, irritants, or foreign objects. Tattoo-related granulomas comprise tightly packed epithelioid cells, lymphocytes, and multinucleated giant cells arranged into tightly packed layers.
