Water Damaged Tattoos

Tattoo Care During Healing Process

Swimming should be avoided until the tattoo has fully healed, as it can hinder the recovery process and ruin the appearance of the tattoo. It is recommended to wash the tattoo gently, blot it dry, and wait at least a day before applying more ointment to reduce the damage caused by excessive application.

Water Damage Prevention

To prevent water damage, it is essential to wash the new tattoo with antibacterial soap at least three or four times a day and keep it dry. Submerging the tattoo in water, such as during bathing or swimming, may damage the adhesive strength of Saniderm, a waterproof bandage used for tattoo care. Swimming exposes healing Tattoos to harmful bacteria, which can lead to infection, skin irritation, or even death in some cases. It is advisable to wait until the tattoo is fully healed before swimming. If swimming is unavoidable, waterproof bandages and tattoo sealants should be used to protect the tattoo from chlorine and aid in healing.

Heat Damage Prevention

Properly cleaning the tattooed body part is crucial to prevent inflammation and disruption of the healing process. Showering too frequently or with excessive water may also cause damage. When washing fresh tattoos, warm water and non-abrasive soap without fragrances or dyes should be used. Exposing the tattooed area to direct sunlight can damage the tattoo and result in sunburn. Sweating may be less effective in cooling the body in large tattooed areas.

Chemical Damage Prevention

Chemical damage can complicate tattoo healing and cause itching, flaking, scabbing, and ink loss. Swimming in chlorinated water should be avoided until the skin has fully recovered. Showering with lukewarm water and using antibacterial soap without fragrances or harsh chemicals is recommended. Tattoo ink contains harmful components that may trigger the release of carcinogenic substances into the body. Military personnel are especially vulnerable to these reactions, affecting sleep and concentration.

Bacterial Infection Prevention

Bacterial infections can occur due to disruptions in the skin’s protective mechanisms. Endogenous pathogens from normal skin flora or external contaminants introduced during tattoo procedures can lead to ailments. Depending on their source, these infections can result in papular eruptions, erythema, lymph node enlargement, or sepsis. Recent severe skin and soft tissue infections were linked to contaminated ink used at a tattoo parlor.

Proper Care Tips

To ensure proper healing, avoid lying on a new tattoo and submerging it in water during showering. Overmoisturization can thicken and crack the scab, impeding the healing process.
