The Itchy and Flaky Tattoo Healing Process

Stage One

The initial days after getting a tattoo can be painful. Redness, swelling, and oozing are expected during this stage, typically lasting about a week. The body releases white blood cells to combat infections and forms scabs. Itching and flaking may still be present, so it’s important not to scratch. Apply Thirteen Daggers Ink Balm regularly for hydration.

Stage Two

In stage two of healing, oozing from the tattoo will subside, and flaking will occur. The skin may become dry and tight, but it’s essential not to pick at it to prevent scarring. Cleanse and moisturize regularly with unscented soap and avoid direct sunlight. Pat the tattoo dry gently after showering and avoid friction.

Stage Three

During this stage, itching should diminish, and scabs may form. Scratching or picking at the scabs can lead to infection. Oozing may occur, which is a normal part of healing. Keep the tattoo wrapped overnight or shower with mild soap to reduce oozing. Cleanse the tattoo daily with lukewarm water and mild soap, and apply non-scented antibacterial ointment or tattoo balm.

Stage Four

Most scabs should disappear during this stage, but the skin may feel flaky or dry. Lotioning regularly can help maintain soft scabs. Avoid picking or irritating the tattooed area; it can remove ink and result in light spots. Follow aftercare hygiene standards, cleanse with warm water and unscented soap, and pat dry. Overnight wrapping can eliminate oozing.
