Barbed wire was an invaluable asset to farmers and ranchers in the 1870s, making fence construction easier while helping prevent cattle from wandering pastures or croplands. To galvanize it, the wire must first be cleaned in a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution before being rinsed with hot water to complete its transformation into galvanized metal.
