What Are the Signs of an Infected Tattoo Scab?

Signs of an Infection: Scabbing is integral to healing, but it may also indicate an infection has developed. Knowing what signs to look out for so you can seek medical assistance before it worsens is vital for effective healthcare management.

Symptoms of an Infection: Tattoo scab infections often produce swelling, heat, and redness. Medical assistance should be sought immediately if the condition lasts beyond 72 hours. Tattoo scabs form when plasma (a blood component) leaks out and forms an opaque covering over an open wound, helping the skin heal and blocking germs from entering an incision site. Scabs may be itchy and painful but are generally accepted as part of the healing process. Please do not touch your tattoo scab directly with your hands; this could open it and allow bacteria to enter. Be gentle when applying lotion or moisturizers, and avoid physical activities that might cause friction or impact the area.

Treatment: If your tattoo has become infected, multiple treatments are available to treat the infection quickly and safely. Most infections will resolve within a few days with proper care and management. Clean this area with antibacterial soap before thoroughly rinsing it with water afterward. Apply a thin coat of antibiotic ointment three to four times a day and pat dry; within several weeks, your skin should have recovered entirely, and any scab should fall off on its own. Avoid picking at an infected scab, which can interfere with its natural healing process and lead to further scarring. Picking or scratching may disrupt this process and open up an already present scab resulting in scarring.

Prevention: While most tattoos will form scabs as they heal, some can become infected and cause red and itchy patches with pus-filled drainage that causes pain or discomfort. Proper care of a newly applied tattoo is the best way to prevent an infected scab from forming, with most tattoo artists suggesting washing it gently with mild soap and water three to five times each day. At least three times daily, lightly coat the tattoo with antibiotic ointment, massaging it into your skin as though applying lotion. This helps ensure the scab remains soft without drying out or hardening.
