How to Treat a Tattoo

1. Apply a Moisturizer

After cleaning and drying your tattoo, apply a thin layer of Sanibalm as a moisturizer. This will hydrate the skin, relieve itching, and prevent cracking. It’s essential to avoid over-applying to prevent thick scabbing or scarring.

2. Wash the Tattoo Twice a Day

Clean your tattoo twice daily with antibacterial soap to promote proper wound care. Gently wash the area, rinse, and pat dry. Apply moisturizer or ointment post-wash, but avoid petroleum-based products that can clog pores and pull out ink.

3. Apply a Moisturizer or Ointment

Within two weeks, most scabs should fade. After cleansing, apply a thin coat of your preferred healing ointment or lotion. Fragrance-free options like Aquaphor or Bacitracin are commonly recommended. Avoid scented lotions as they may irritate fresh tattoos.

4. Apply a Bandage

After removing the initial bandage, cleanse the tattoo using antibacterial soap and warm water. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or ointment. Avoid petroleum-based products that trap bacteria. Replace the bandage before showering or engaging in activities that may wet or dirty the tattoo.

5. Don’t Pick at the Scabs

Avoid picking at scabs, as they protect the tattoo from infection. Picking can cause pigment loss, over-healing, extended healing times, and scarring. Bacteria on your fingernails can introduce germs and dirt, increasing the risk of infection and distorting the design.
