Maud Wagner

Maud Wagner was the first woman tattoo artist in America. Born in Kansas and making her mark as a circus performer specializing in aerial acrobatics and contortionism, Maud made history when she established herself as a pioneering tattoo artist.

At the 1904 World’s Fair, she met Gus Wagner – a merchant seaman known for being known as “The Tattooed Globetrotter.” He wanted to date her, and she agreed on one condition: that they take part in a tattoo lesson together – thus learning the hand-poke tattooing method known as the stick and poke method. They traveled together, sometimes performing as tattoo attractions at sideshows.

Jessie Knight

Jessie Knight, Britain’s first female tattoo artist and an innovator who broke many barriers, was a striking figure who revolutionized the profession. Born into an eccentric Croydon family and the granddaughter of poet EA Lempriere Knight (her grandfather), Jessie was the eldest child among eight siblings and pioneered many achievements throughout her life.

Her father was a tattooist, so the family moved often. When she joined a circus, she first worked as a sharpshooter dummy before transitioning into being a horseback rider and pistol-spinning markswoman while simultaneously following her passion for becoming a tattooist. At 27, she married, but soon after that, her husband disapproved of her tattooing hobby, and she temporarily stopped before returning. Unfortunately, however, he also began abusing her, and she experienced six miscarriages within six years before managing to escape and start a career of her own.

Hannah Aitchison

Hannah Aitchison is a true multihyphenate: her tattoo studio doubles as an antiques and curiosity shop that sells art and antiques, she teaches tattoo conventions and artist collectives, and has appeared on multiple TV shows – most notably TLC’s LA Ink series 1 through 3. She’s an acclaimed fine artist known for her pin-ups, portraits, and vibrant use of color. Additionally, she’s an expert knitter and studied classical singing.

Curiosity Shop was opened by Aitchison and Scott White in 2014 to provide an unconventional yet fun environment for tattooing and tinkering services while providing their clients with inspiration from vintage and antique ephemera collections.

Rose Hardy

Rose Hardy is a well-known tattoo artist who has appeared on several episodes of Ink Master as both an artist and guest judge, including seasons 11 and 12. New Zealand-born tattooist Jessica Tenderthron is an exemplary neotraditional artist with extensive knowledge in both black-and-grey and color realism techniques. Furthermore, she’s also a painter and owner of Tenderthron’s studio in Auckland.

Hardy graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a full graduate scholarship to Yale but instead chose tattooing. Working with Honolulu-based tattooist Sailor Jerry Collins inspired Hardy to study Japanese tattooing.

Melanie May

Melanie May is an independent tattoo artist based out of Melbourne, Australia, who first gained recognition for the sleeve of micro tattoos she shared on her Instagram page. She’s an introverted young lady who likes drinking and smoking marijuana to relax before shows, roller coasters, and amusement parks.
