Is There Such a Thing As a Disappearing Tattoo?

Ephemeral Ink’s innovative temporary tattoo ink fades over time, offering an alternative to permanent tattoos. The Ink contains smaller molecules that the body can quickly process and eliminate. According to the CEO, Jeffrey Liu, it gradually dissolves like dissolvable stitches.

 What is it?

A disappearing tattoo is an ink designed to fade gradually over time. Ephemeral Ink’s Ink contains tiny particles that disintegrate like dissolvable stitches. It stands out in the industry as an impressive trend, even though it may not be available at local tattoo parlors. Jeffrey Liu, the CEO of Ephemeral, spent over a year developing this technology.

 How does it work?

Ephemeral Ink, founded by New York University students, has developed a unique way to fade tattoo ink over time. Their “ephemeral” Ink is designed to last one year and uses smaller dye molecules. This allows the body to naturally flush them away, similar to how dissolvable stitches work. No specialized equipment is needed, so current tattoo artists can easily use it. The team spent six years perfecting the Ink, conducting tests to ensure its safety and effectiveness. The product will be available commercially by 2017.

 How long will it last?

The duration of the tattoo depends on various factors such as design, shading, skin type, placement location, and aftercare. Traditional tattoos last for years because the Ink is injected into the deeper layer of skin, called the dermis. The immune system gradually clears away the tattoo ink by sending specialized cells called macrophages to consume the Ink. Due to the unique properties of tattoo ink, it is unlikely to be quickly flushed away.
