Causes of Bumps Around Tattoos

Tattoo-covered skin can be highly susceptible to various factors, including bumps or rashes, which may appear during healing.

These white spots or bumps typically do not need to be cause for alarm; they should fade away as your tattoo heals. If they persist, consult your tattoo artist or physician immediately for advice.

Allergic Reaction

If your tattoo develops red or ink-colored bumps near its edges, this could be an allergic reaction triggered by food, pollen, medications, or even the ink used to create it.

Rashes typically form when allergens come in contact with mast cells, special cells that secrete histamine into the bloodstream and release it through small blood vessels called capillaries in affected areas, dilation resulting in reddening and swelling.

Infection

As part of the healing process for tattooing, it’s normal to experience some itching and redness around your new ink. However, medical assistance must be sought immediately if anything more serious occurs.

Tattoo infections are caused by bacteria entering an open wound and spreading further, potentially leading to pain, swelling, and rashes – potentially even leading to more severe health complications that could be fatal.

At first, signs of infection, redness, itching, and rashes around your tattoo may appear. Therefore, regular cleansing is recommended to ensure germs remain at bay and avoid an outbreak.

Granulomas

Tattoo pigments may cause an adverse reaction in the body that leads to granulomas – noncancerous bumps that cause inflammation and pain – that appear as bumps on skin surfaces.

While few experience any side effects from getting tattooed, some individuals can develop painful granulomas after getting inked – these can appear anywhere on your body but commonly on the hands, arms, and legs.

Some granulomas may be caused; others could be the body’s immune system going into overdrive to fight bacteria.

Over-application of ointment

The over-application of ointment most often causes bumps around tattoos. Too much ointment may clog pores and cause pimples, creating unsightly bumps.

One reason is that an over-application of ointment can trap moisture beneath the skin and lead to bubbling or even scabbing while simultaneously encouraging Propionibacterium acnes growth – bacteria known to cause acne.

If your tattoo has bubbles on its surface, rather than applying ointment directly, allow it to dry and peel on its own – this will enable the ink to heal without becoming discolored and look better overall.
